Draft Of DPS article

Ed’s Fight For Fame

How did an unpopular everyday teenager become a CLASSICAL LEGEND?!
Even Ed find it hard to explain…

I lost my father in my last year of primary school. My dad was everything to me, he would be the one took care of me while my mum went out and drank. My Mother suffered a very deep side of depression and would refuse to eat or speak to anyone but me. So I dropped out of school to assist her through the pain and suffering, causing me to lose touch with society; I ended up isolating myself with grief. I’d sit in my room for hours staring at my ceiling. I guess classical music brought me back to reality and into a better place. As mum improved, I was able to get back into school.

As a teenager, I found it hard to socialise and make friends, so I decided to pick up a violin instead of a pen. From this it kick started my love for classical music. Playing the violin helped me escape reality and come in contact with my inner passion. Instead of going to my lessons, I decided to skip them and learn more and more about the culture and atmosphere, which comes with playing the violin. Now when I look back, it was a really bad idea….

I was 18 and had no education. There was no way I would be able to support my mum through our hard lives. Crazily I decided to try and find a career within the world of classical music.
I went into town every day at noon to play my instrument to the world. This helped drastically with my confidence, I remember my first performance in public. I was a nervous wreck. I stood there frozen in fear, prepared but scared.

Little did I know this would be the start of my carer.

I thought in my head, “this is for you dad”

I started to play.

I quickly gained a large amount of attention; a jolt of confidence sprang through me. At this moment I knew, this was what I was destined for. While playing I looked forward and realised I had gathered a great crowd. There silently stood, transfixed, listening to me play. As I came to the end of my piece clapping began, it felt like I was dreaming. I’d never had anyone clap for me before.
After I ended my performance everyone left. But one man stood there. He came over to me “this was the best violin performance id ever heard performed on the street! You have great potential!” He then gave me a card and said “if you’re interested in performing to a much bigger crowd of around 20,000 plus people. Call that number” pointing at the card, then walked off.

Overwhelmed with excitement I completely forgot I didn’t even have a phone, my mum could never afford one. So I picked up my stuff as fast as I possible could and ran home. Dropping my things at the door, I sprinted into my room to try and find 50p to use the telephone box outside the church in my village. I reached the telephone box and rang he man immediately!

This was it, the start of my life, my carer, my future.

My first concert was in the Royal Albert Hall in London. It was huge! I’d never seen a place so big! I was so nervous I thought I was going to faint… As I sat waiting to go on, I looked out to the audience and heard a faint “Ed! Hey! Ed!” It was my mum sat on the front row shouting my name trying to get my attention. So I obviously gave her a wave. Seeing my mum calmed my nerves a lot. I was finally able to sit without shaking in. my name was called out “Edward Collins” I walked on, into a standing ovation. My heart lifted as applause raised the roof. Suddenly the room fell silent, as people waited for me to play.

As I played I could feel my body flow with the instrument. I’d never felt like this before, it was right weird… people actually knowing who I was, acknowledging I was an actual human being. They looking at me in awe, I couldn’t believe it! I finished my piece, the room remained silent, I looked down to my mum and saw her smiling, proud, happy and strong. For the first time since I was 10. With a sudden burst of applause the lights came back on and everyone stood chanting my name. “Ed, Ed, Ed”. Taking a bow a slight tear fell from my eye onto the stage.
In the next year, I had many performances but the best by far was the Italian tour in Verona. Where coincidentally, I met my girlfriend. I stood proud and thankful for everything that had happened to me. Performing a piece I had created, just felt unbelievable!
After I performed and was about to exit the building, I saw a beautiful woman stood laughing into her phone. As a performer get nervous with a lot of things, but walking up to this girl just felt different… it felt like I was about to perform in the town again. “Hey” That was all I managed to say but it was enough. She is now my fiancĂ©e.

I know, sounds like a story doesn’t it...
Trust me. It isn’t.

The beauty of romance is clearly on the cards do Ed. Maybe we can look forward to a wedding in the near future.

TA research - Questions/Answer Analysis

Question 1, "Do you prefer a modern or traditional music magazine?", showed me that my target audience would prefer a modern music magazine. This means I will need to research into modern magazines and develop knowledge on what makes a magazine "modern". This question was very one sided as 18 people said they'd prefer a modern style magazine, compared to 2 people who said they preferred a traditional magazine style. This is mainly based on the fact that traditional music magazines were mainly based around an older TA, whereas modern magazines are based around the younger, teenager TA. seeing as my TA is teens and young adults, and my TA said they would prefer a modern magazine, my classical music magazine will have a modern style design.

Question 2, "Do you like a very bright and bold masthead?" , 20 people said yes, noone said no. This was again a very one sided question as noone said no. This was maybe a pointless question as magazines usually have a bright and bold masthead to help it stand out. A magazine is designed to stand out so my masthead is going to have to be bright and engaging otherwise it will not catch someones eye.

Question 3, "Does swearing offend you?" , 3 people said that swearing does offend them, 17 said they are fine with swearing being involved with a magazine. This shows that most people are not bothered if there is swearing in a music magazine. Due to the answer no having a much larger amount of people than no, swearing is an option I could use.

Question 4, "How much would you pay for a magazine?", this is a very important question to ask as it helps me with how much I should pay for my magazine. the answers I received were under £5 which surprised me. From other research I've gathered and these answers I will most likely put the price of my magazine around £3-£5. My TA are usually on a low income so the price will also be lower, allowing teens and young adults to be more able to afford the magazine.

Question 5, " Would you be more likely to buy a music magazine if it had the words "FREE" or "WIN" on it?", everyone I asked this question to said yes. This has helped me a lot as I now know that if I use this technique I will be more likely to make a sale. This question surprised me as i thought the words "free" and "win" wouldn't matter to someone who would be buying the magazine.

Question 6, "Would you prefer a small amount of text?", 4 people said they didn't mind weather it had a small amount of text of not, and 16 said they'd prefer less text. This did not surprise me as a lot of teens and young adults dislike reading a lot of text in a music magazine. Also, teens usually get magazines for gossip and just to read about whats happening. The majority of people would prefer less text, so in my magazine I will try and shorten things down to suit my TA.

Question 7, "Why do you buy a magazine?", 12 people said, the gossip and then 8 people said they are fun to read. this wasn't surprising to me as i know from being a teenager myself that young adults and teens like gossip and arguments more than anything. If I said there was gossip in the magazine on the front cover it would increase sales dramatically. This question has helped me understand the main reasons why people buy magazines and has given me the techniques I could use to increase my magazines sales.

Quesiton 8, "What colours would you infer with a classical magazine?" from the 20 teens who answered this question, 11 said white, grey and black, 7 said gold, white and silver and 2 said black and white. A lot of people said the black, white and grey colours because most old fashioned classical music magazines are designed with these colours but are aimed at an older target audience. This has helped me identify the most common colours used in classical music magazines.

Question 9, "9. Do you think that classical magazines are boring?" 15 people said yes and 5 said no. This suprised me as music magazines are usually very fun and help you get the gossip which young adults and teens like. When i asked the people who said yes why most of them replied with "the colours are just boring and noting sticks out" this is very helpful to me as I now know that to make my magazine exciting and fun i will need to use bright and engaging colours.

Question 10, "Do you like the thought of a limited edition package for the magazine?" This was a very one sided answer as everyone I asked said yes. This is maybe a pointless question as when I create my magazine It will be a normal edition. Although this question and answered have given me information about how much people like the limited edition designs and rarity.

Planning: main image

Some of the photographs I will take my model will be taken in Brigg. Brigg is full of perfect locations for which I could position my model; Edward Collins. Due to its wide range of classic and modern locations. These locations include: the bridge, a canal with lots of wildlife, streets, a band stand and modern shopping centres. These locations are areas I could take lots of photos and chose which ones I personally feel are the best to use for my main image for my front cover, contents and DPS page.

Edward Collins is a 19 year old violin player from Sheffield. He has just shot to fame after been spotted playing on the high-street in Sheffield city centre. He is keen and passionate about his career in classical music and wants to make it both here and in the US. One of his biggest passions is to make classical music cool and often creates mash-ups of old classical pieces with new pop hits.

My DPS will be about Edward Collins' life and how he became famous. It will tell the emotional tale of a young, isolated man who takes care of his depressed mother and is given a shot at fame after busking in Sheffield city centre. The article will take the form of a narrative article.

I am hoping my DPS article would inspire young people and remind them that acting 'cool' with their friends isn't everything: hard work and kindness is what will pay off.

Research Masthead 2

I like the way the masthead of this magazine changes its colour as it moved through the models hair. It is a very good idea to use for my main front cover as it creates synergy.

Planning- initial ideas for photographs for : the front cover, the contents page and the DPS.

My friend Sam will be my model and will take part in 3 photo-shoots. In these I will photograph him with and without props. He will always look smart but in my first photo-shoot he will have a relaxed twist by having his top button open. I will do this as it breaks classical music magazine conventions and I think it will make him seem more relatable to my target audience (16-21). In this same photo-shoot I will use a violin, aiming to make the instrument look more fashionable to my TA. It is at this first shoot that I will aim to take my front cover image.

In my second photo-shoot I will take images aimed for my contents page and maybe for my DPS. This will be a studio shoot. My model will wear the a similar costume as in my first shoot but will wear a blue shirt with a white music themed tie to add comedy and show my star has a sense of humor.

Furthermore, my third photo-shoot will hopefully provide me with at least one image for my DPS. This will be a location shoot, in a variety of places such as: a band stand, near shops, a bridge and near a river. In this shoot my model will still look smart but will again have a casual twist, not wearing a tie and wearing jeans. Taking a location image is something I have seen in my research and I feel a location shot fits with my DPS article and is something that I feel with interest my TA..

Other details
(I.e. camera angle, effect you are looking for and how you might do it, do you need a tripod, etc.)
Landscape shots, I will need a tripod as it will make sure the shot won’t be blurred. It will also steady my shot. I will shoot both high and low angle shots but feel the low angle will be better of Sam as I want to make him seem powerful and confident.
Camera angled so it only shows the models fingers using the piano. The violin will be on top of a music piece. I want to put emphasis on the beauty of the instruments.
Landscape, portrait shots. I will have to use a tripod. I want to make Greta appear feminine.
I want take a different image of Sam but still want him to look confident and proud of his talent and achievement.

Research - Star image 1

In this magazine, the star has been positioned looking away from the camera and holding a prop and looking quite relaxed. From how the model is stood and the way he is positioned you can tell that the TA for this magazine is mainly associated with  a younger age.

In this classical music magazines front cover, the model appears as a very passionate and sophisticated artist, although the magazine appeals to an older TA which would not suit my specific TA for my magazine.

In this magazine you can see the model looking over his shoulder towards the camera. This helps represent power, breaking conventions of a classical magazine. However, like many other classical magazines it is mainly associated with an older upper class TA.

This research has helped me understand that to help my magazine attract a younger teenage TA I will need to:

  • Position him facing the camera
  • With a prop
  • Wearing bright engaging colour contrasting colours
  • Looking passionate

Research sell lines

I need a sell line or strapline for my magazine.
Mine could be:
The UK's top Classical magazine 2016.
Q put their's above the masthead. I don't think I want to do that.

I think I want mine below the masthead.

I also need an album guide and maybe a free download.

I like this Plus and I really like the scrolls either side of it.

Research - developing my front cover

I realised I had too much white space and needed graphics. I found this QW front cove and liked the way it is o busy and appealing for a younger TA.
There is very little white space.
It has:

  • bright colours
  • puff
  • prop
  • different fonts

I don't want to move my cover story line but i do need to add interesting features.

Features need to be exciting so people will buy the magazine.

I like the different fonts. They reflect the style of music.

I also need a PLUS!
I like the way the red is used in the headings. I could use black and gold or pick the red up off my model's tie.

Double Page Spread page: Consolidating my research

DPS 1- How has this research influenced my planning and creativity

I need to consider the type of language I use for my TA. This is important as I could choose between formal or informal. Informal would break conventions of a classical music magazine. Also formal would help mu magazine stay smart and sophisticated. Taking shots from a low angle to create mood. I could take lower angled photos to create an overpowering atmosphere towards the reader. This would again break conventions. I like the splatter - this is better for a younger TA. If I was to use an informal language type and design I will use this technique.

DPS 2 - How has this research influenced my planning and creativity

I really like the colour scheme of black, white, grey and pink. I could use this type of colour scheme as it is a very good way to highlight key information and bold out text.  I like how at the beginning of the text there is a large letter D, helping bold out the writing. This could be used on my final dps as it looks very neat and helps make it easier to read as it is a larger letter to start off the paragraph. I like how the text is set out in a Q&A theme. I've seen a lot of DPS's with this layout, showing that it is very popular. So I will most likely set my text out in a Q&A theme. The border around the DPS is very bright and eye catching. I dont think using a border for my final DPS is a very good idea as borders are not very attractive on a classical magazine.

Contents page: Consolidating my research

Contents page 2 - How this research has affected my creativity

  • I really like the purple banner and large white text. I will use a colours banner so that the text and fonts will stand out and attract a larger amount of people.
  • I like that the magazines page numbers and information are text wrapped in 4 Columbus. This is a very good idea as it is keeps the paragraphs and articles clean and easy to read. I will use this in my final design.
  • I also like how there is a small image from the front cover on the contents page. I will also use this design aspect to help link the front cover and the contents page so that the reader would understand the main genre of the magazine more.

Contents page 3 - How this research has influenced my planning

  • I like how to width of the columns are equal, because it creates symmetry in the text which is ascetically pleasing to the reader. I will use this in the design of my product as my magazine will need to be very ascetically pleasing to the target audience. I will also use equal Columbus as it helps set out the text in clear writing.
  • I also like how to numbers showing which pages the articles are on are highlighted in a different colour helping them stand out. From this contents page I have learnt that to help highlight the page numbers which link to the magazine I will need to use a bright colour such as bright red and bright yellow.
  • I like how the photos have page numbers on, so that the reader doesn't have to read a large amount of text to find out where the artist on the photo is in the magazine. I will use this aspect when desiging my contents page as it helps create less fuss towards the reader.

Front cover: consolidating my research

Front cover 1 - How this Research has Influenced my Planning and Creativity

  • I like the style and font used in this magazine, I will use a variety of fonts such as sans and sans serif to appeal to a wider target audience and help it become funner and more engaging.
  • I also like the rebellious atmosphere given from the red and black colour scheme. From this research I could break conventions of a classical music magazine and create a more rebellious theme, which would open up my magazine to a wider target audience and help attract a younger age of customers.

Front cover 2 - How this Research has Influenced my Planning and Creativity

  •  I really like the fonts and the colour scheme. It is very engaging and easy to read. This is a very good idea as in my magazine I will need to make my text as easy to read as possible.
  •  I also like the position of the model and the prop that she has in her hand, when I design my main magazine, I will use this idea of a prop so that the image doesn't look as bland and boring.

Front cover 3 - How this Research has Influenced my Planning and Creativity

  • I really like the way the main title "Lady Gaga" is hidden behind the star as a type of identification, when designing my main magazine I could use this to help the ascetics and become more eye catching to the reader.
  • I also really like the idea of the text "Move over Madonna..." as this will appeal to a younger audience. This is a very good idea, although I will not be using this technique as it does not suit the classical music magazine theme. The way the letters are text wrapped around the body is really interesting and unique. I will use text wrapping so that my magazine will make it easy for the reader to know exactly who the model is as the name fits around them in clear writing.
  • I like the kerning and the way some spaces are huge and others are much closer between letters. I will be using this technique to develop my magazine as it will help separate text.

Front cover 4 - How this Research has Influenced my Planning and Creativity

  • I really like how the magazines background colours have help the model and text stand out. This technique will be used when designing my magazine as I want my magazine to be very engaging and eye catching.
  • I really like the way this magazine has designed its masthead and text on the front cover.
  • I also really like the way the articles are set out on the left hand side of the page. This aspect will be used in my final design as it provides a clear space of the front cover for the information about the articles on the magazine.

Front cover image location

This photo is taken underneath a tree with orange and green leaves which help create a calm and quiet atmosphere which classical music is mainly about. You can tell by her face and the lighting that they have used is natural lighting and reflectors when taking this photo.

This photo was taken outside in the cold winter while the model was sat on a park bench. This is suitable for the genre as it provides a white colour scheme. The lighting is natural helping the models face brighten and look cleaner.

This photo is taken in a photo shoot infront of a dark brown woodern door with low lighting everywhere apart from the models face. The lighting is very dark which helps the model stand out with her red violin and black and red dress. The lighting is only on the models face helping identify her as the star of the magazine.

This photo was taken inside in an opened glass area with pale goldern colours and a white floor. This is a very good location for the front cover of a classical music magazine as pale colours create a quiet calming atmosphere. The pale background also helps the text and star stand out as they are bright engaging colours.

The photo was taken against a wall with the star sat on a wooden bench. It was obviously taken outside with studio lights. The lighting creates a nice clean look on the stars face. Overall the background is quite bland which creates an eye catching front cover.

This photo was taken inside with the star sat at a black and white stripey chair and table booth with a dark brown back and a large hole in it where you can see brighter colours and lights. It uses mainly natural light from outside the window but it slightly highlighted at the back of the seat. The table is a glossy black which provides a reflection from the model.

How this has helped me with my photo shoot :

- It has given me ideas of how to place my model
- How the atmosphere changes with a model looking into the camera compared to them not
- what props I could give to the model to hold
